“That’s A Wrap” Great Movie Ride

Written By:  Melanie Hina

As many of you already know August 13, 2017 was the last day for the Great Movie Ride at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.   As we rode through the movies one final time it was with much nostalgia and misty eyes.  We thought back over our first ride and the many years of enjoying all that this iconic ride has represented.

The Great Movie Ride’s debut was on Disney MGM Studios’ opening day, May 1, 1989. It was inside a replica of Hollywood, California’s Grauman’s Chinese Theatre; a historic movie palace on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.  We have ridden through motion picture history for 28 years on this beloved 22 minute attraction.  It was originally supposed to be the main attraction in a show-biz themed pavilion in Disney’s EPCOT.  But, thankfully, Disney saw its potential and created an entire theme park around it.

With that said, there are few things certain in life.  However, one that is certain is change.  With change comes a mixture of sadness for what was and excitement for what will be.  So, what will become of this prime piece of Disney real estate?  It will become

Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway.  A first for Disney Imagineers’, Mickey and Minnie’s first ride is themed solely around them and is a 2 ½ D attraction.  This ride is promised not to disappoint. So even though the Great Movie Ride will always be near and dear to our hearts, let’s trust in the huge success that is Disney and be excited for the changes to come.  Farewell Great Movie Ride.   You served us well.
